"Drop The Net!"
This paragraph was posted on a public message board, addressed to me:
"All artists are free to do whatever they want. Who is denying you your right to create?
Or is it you believe you are being denied your fame and fortune? Do you believe Shania
Twain should not take or be allowed the big money backing her because it is not fair?
Would you take it if it were offered to you? How would you insure all artists the right
to be seen and heard? How many artists do you personally make an effort to see and
support?"
This is my response:
Let's assume hypothetically that Unknown Artist's outburst makes sense. I'll try to
respond to each point:
UA: All artists are free to do whatever they want.
JB: OK.
UA: Who is denying you your right to create?
JB: Nobody. But it is a closed market.
UA: Or is it you believe you are being denied your fame and fortune?
JB: I've had fame and fortune. It's not bad. Answer: Probably. How about you?
UA: Do you believe Shania Twain should not take or be allowed the big money backing her
because it is not fair?
JB: I don't blame her for taking it. I believe big money controlling music airplay is unfair.
UA: Would you take it if it were offered to you?
JB: Yes. Are you making an offer?
UA: How would you insure all artists the right to be seen and heard?
JB: In my ideal world, art would be judged on merit. I feel it's helpful to point out the
problems.
UA: How many artists do you personally make an effort to see and support?
JB: Dumb question, but I'll try. I promote Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan music. It's good.
I also try to help other artists who might benefit from my experience.
Lighten up.
Jack Blanchard.
P.S. (What I really meant was: Screw you. But I'm too nice.)
